Integrated Keyboards for Campus Facilities

The University Hospital in Dresden commissioned you to renovate the Faculty of Medicine. What was the biggest challenge you encountered?

SD: To be precise, the most demanding part was transforming the microscopy room. It was a pilot project — nothing of this kind had ever been done before in Saxony. The key challenge was providing computers and all necessary hardware for student use, while ensuring that students had no direct physical access to the equipment. For example, the keyboards had to be integrated directly into the tabletops. On top of that, the university requested each workstation to feature a retractable monitor and a built-in keyboard.

What requirements did the university have regarding media technology?

SD: The equipment used at the student lab workstations had to be exceptionally durable. It needed to withstand heavy daily use, offer protection against theft and vandalism, and meet strict hygiene standards. In particular, since the keyboards would be in direct contact with students, it was crucial that they could be easily wiped down and disinfected to ensure a clean and safe learning environment.

You chose stainless steel keyboards from GETT. What led to that decision?

SD: Beyond the requirements I mentioned earlier, it was also important for the keyboards to feature an integrated touchpad — eliminating the need for external mice. After conducting in-depth research, we discovered GETT’s stainless steel keyboards. Their robust stainless steel surface ensures exceptional durability and offers reliable protection against external impact.

We ultimately selected the InduSteel Panel Mount Keyboard with a full key layout. Its ultra-flat design made it easy to integrate directly into the custom-built tabletops. When not in use, the keyboard can simply be pushed in and stored beneath the workstation, keeping the workspace clean and efficient.

Did you consider any alternatives when selecting the right keyboards?

SD: Of course — our research brought up other manufacturers as well. But one of the decisive factors in favor of GETT was the integrated touchpad, which many competitors simply didn’t offer in the form we needed.
